About Coach Mike
Michael Mohnkern (or Coach Mike) was a beloved, longtime coach with both the Bellaire and Memorial women’s programs. Coach Mike also created a lacrosse program at Drew Academy, in Houston’s Acres Homes. Coach Mike’s passion for both Lacrosse and coaching started early, as both a founding member of Texas A&M’s Men’s Lacrosse program and as a coach, directly after graduating college, in Mumford, Texas – a position he would make into a lifelong devotion. Coach Mike is remembered for the unbiased, creative approach to coaching, his infectious positive attitude, his commitment to sportsmanship and his passion for the sport of lacrosse.
About the Scholarship
In honor of Coach Mike, the Michael Mohnkern Lacrosse Scholarship was created. $2,500 is awarded to a winning recipient each year. The beneficiary of this award is someone who exemplifies the values shared by Coach Mike. This player may not necessarily be the most skilled individual on the team; but instead, this is a player who does not give up, someone who has remained committed to the sport, and continues to try her hardest to be the best she can be. This young lady is someone who comes to practice with a great attitude that lifts the spirit of the teammates around her. This is not a team member that lets her frustrations get the best of her in trying situations; instead, this is a team member who maintains a positive demeanor in times where her patience is pushed to the limit. Like Coach Mike, this player is not fazed by the misbehavior's of those around her. She maintains good sportsmanship despite the actions of others. Last but not least, the recipient of this award is someone who has a true love for the sport of lacrosse.
